The problem
Accessibility in a public-sector app is not a quality goal, it is a legal obligation — and an audited one. The existing app had grown without a consistent approach to screen readers, focus order, contrast or touch target sizes.
Constraints
An external audit means the bar is not “we think it is fine” but a written finding by TÜV Austria. Every screen had to hold up, including the ones built years earlier by people no longer on the team.
What I did
Which findings you owned, how you made the fixes stick so the next feature did not undo them, and what you changed in the process rather than in the code.
Outcome
MeineÖGK became the first app in Austria’s social insurance system to receive the TÜV Austria WACA certificate for digital accessibility.
